What is Chart?

Chart is the graphical tool used to demonstrate the data record in the graphical form which made a user to understand the things easily. There is number of chart categories namely column Chart, Pie Chart, Bar Chart, Area Chart etc.

Here are the steps to insert a kind of chart in the active document....

Goto Insert tab and click Chart tool in the Illustration group; then.
In the dialog window choose a kind of chart under different chart categories; then.
Click OK;
It will show a sample of that chart type along with data entered in Excel Application tiled together;
You can change to the actual data figure in the excel sheet, the chart will be modified automatically;
You can even do the formatting of the chart appearance.

Column Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a column chart. Column charts are useful for showing data changes over a period of time or for illustrating comparisons among items. In column charts, categories are typically organized along the horizontal axis and values along the vertical axis.

Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a line chart, Line charts can display continuous data over time, set against a common scale, and are therefore ideal for showing trends in data at equal intervals. In a line chart, category data is distributed evenly along the horizontal axis, nd all value data is distributed evenly along the vertical axis.

Pie Chart

Data that is arranged in one column or row only on a worksheet can be plotted ina pie chart. Pie charts show the size of items in one data series, proportional to the sum of the items. The data points in a pie chart are displayed as a percentage of the whole pie.

Bar Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a bar chart. Bar charts illustrate comparisons among individual items.

Area Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in an area chart. Area charts emphasize the magnitude of change over time, and can be used to draw attention to the total value across a trend. For example, data that represents profit over time can be plotted in an area chart to emphasize the total profit.

Scatter Chart

A scatter chart has two value axis, showing one set of numerical data along the horizonal axis (x-axis) and another along the vertical axis (y-axis). It combines these values into single data points and displays them in uneven intervals, or clusters. Scatter charts are commonly used for displaying and comparing numeric values, such as scientific, statistical, and engineering data.

Stock Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows in a specific order on a worksheet can be plotted in a stock chart. As its name implies, a stock chart is most often used to illustrate the fluctuation of stock prices. However, this chart may also be used for scientific data. For example, you could use a stock chart to indicate the fluctuation of daily or annul temperatures. You must organize your data in the correct order to crete stock charts.

Surface Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a surface chart. A surface chart is useful when you want to find optimum combinations between two sets of data.

Doughnut Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows only on a worksheet can be plotted in a doughnut chart. Like a pie chart, a doughnut chart shows the relationship of parts to a whole, but it can contain more than one data series.

Bubble Chart

Data that is arranged in columns on a worksheet so that x values are listed in the first column and corresponding y values and bubble size values are listed in adjacent columns, can be plotted in a bubble chart.

Radar Chart

Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a radar chart. Radar charts compare the aggregate values of a number of data series.

Creating Charts : In Microsoft Excel application, we can create charts in some simple steps....
  • Select the range of cells along with the data entered; and then
  • Goto Insert tab and click Insert Charts dialog launcher button in the Charts group; and
  • In the Insert chart dialog, choose a kind of 00chart template in the dialog and click OK.

You can preview the chart on behalf of the data entered in the sheet. We have number of chart options you can use in the sheet to demonstrate the data in pictorial or graph format.

Moving the Chart

You can move the chart any where in the workbook. You can move the chart to existing sheets or create a new sheet through this and select to move. Here are the details and steps to move the chart in the workbook....

  • Select the chart and goto Chart Tool Design tab and click to Move Chart tool in the Location group; and
  • In the Move Chart dialog, select the object location from the drop down list and click to check to New Sheet and place the name for that sheet where the chart is going to be placed; and 
  • Click OK

Modifying Charts


You can modify the Chart type, Size, Position, Axes and Dat Source in the Excel sheet as per the need. here are the details....

Changing Size & position

You can resize a chart inserted in the excel sheet or position it to a place in the sheet or workbook.

Here are the steps to do this possible....

  • Select the chart in the sheet and scale it through the mouse to resize it; or
  • Goto Chart Tools Format tab and type to chang next to Height & Width text boxes in the Size group.

To position the chart in the worksheet do as follows.....

  • Select the header of chart, when the cursor becomes this 0; then
  • Click and hold to drag the chart position in the worksheet and release the click button when got appropriate location in the worksheet. 

Changeing the Chart type

We can change the chart type of that chart taken or used in the worksheet. We have number of charts category to be used as per the need. Here are the steps to change the chart type.....

  • Select the chart of you want to change the chart type; and 
  • Goto Chart Tools Design tab and click the Change Chart Type tool in the Type group; and 
  • In the Chang Chart Type dialog, select a Chart templates and click OK. The chart type will be changed.

Changing Chart Style

We can change the chart style inserted in the worksheet with range of chart styles provided in Microsoft Excel application. 

Here are the steps to do so.....

  • Select the Chart you want to change the style of; and 
  • Goto Chart Tools Design tab and click to select a chart style group; then 
  • The chart will be assigned a new style in the same chart type group.

Changing the Data source

You can change the data source of the chart inserted or used in the sheet then it will demonstrate the chart graphics with updated data. It is used practically to update the report time to time.

Select Data Sources

  • Select the chart in the worksheet; and 
  • Goto Chart Tools Design tab and click to Change; and 
  • Goto Chart Tools Design tab and click Select Data tool in the Data group; and
  • In the Select Data Source dialog, click Add button to add new data field to the chart; or
  • Click Edit button to edit the existing data source used in the Chart type; or you may even delete particular data field from the Data source; and 
  • Click OK.
